EXCERPT GRADUATE PAPER
As early as 1907 Lu Xun sought an argument that equated the national demise, since the end of Qing dynasty, with the repression of the individual. He than applied this in works of literature. To do so he had to borrow heavily from the literary craft found in literature of the west. Lu Xun produced a number of texts, which were written in the first person. At the time such literary constructions were innovations in China. Fredric Jameson, a leading exponent of post-structuralist theory, sees that subjectivity is absent in texts or stories from pre-modern societies. Allegories of the individual in such societies are symbolic to reality of the greater community, acting in a way, which is similar, or the same to myth. By writing in the first person, Lu Xun, as well as other writers of the May Fourth Movement could divorce the character of the story from the fabric the Chinese social structure, which dominated pre-modern China, namely kinship and the patriarchal fold. Lu Xun, using the first person, began a dialogue between the individual and tradition. This can be exemplified by Lu Xun’s “Diary of a Madman. Lu Xun’s work gives a clear picture as to how the concept of the individual was taken up and incorporated by the May Fourth Movement for political exigencies. How removed where these works form the reality of the common folk?

Overall, the work and research interests I have carried through from undergraduate school, work in the area of education and through to graduate level study and today concerns the affects of economic development on tradition, social health, family, and community, in the developing world. I am also occupied with questions concerning western influence in Asia and Africa, especially in terms of the interplay or lack of such, with local knowledge and indigenous practices.I have spent time in West Africa, visited several Eastern European countries, as well as Portugal, France, Switzlerland, Vietnam, Thailand, The Philippines and Hong Kong, while I have resided in the United Kingdom, Korea, Taiwan, and parts of Mainland China.

MODERNITY Modernity is historically rooted in the changes that took place in Europe around the 1500s. The political and economic forces, which had dominated the Middle Ages, feudalism and the papacy, began to recede, giving way to the new dominate formations of nationalism and mercantilism. It is in this atmosphere of change that Descarte declared, “cogito ergo sum” thus beginning an epistemological trend in charge of uncovering, or discovering of the subject. Habermas identifies subjectivity as arising from “ …key historical events… the Reformation, the Enlightenment, and the French Revolution” (Habermas, 17). The presence of subjectivity was a prominent feature throughout the European events that shaped modernity, and is one that continues to be contested as well as ruminated upon in Continental as well as Anglo- American philosophical discourse.-(taken from graduate paper)

ETHNOCENTRISM IN AMERICA IS COUNTERPRODUCTIVE TO SO CALLED GLOBALISM, UNLESS WE MEAN MARKETS FOR COLA, AND PARKING LOTS FOR PENTAGON VEHICLES
To think that our perceptions and political reality is of some evolved or teleological endpoint in human social and political development, is to succumb to a myopia that is of value to nothing but dominate forces that have carved out and butchered other regions of the world, as of recent decades, leading to extremism which only fuels hatred and ethnocentrism. This becomes circular, absent of critical thought, and ahistorical in understanding our world.

You won’t be able to stop the souls from being predestined for poisons, whatever kind it may be: poisons of morphine, poisons o reding,… poisons of isolation, poisons of onanism, poisons of repeated coitus, poisons of the rooted weakness of the soul, piosons of alcohol, poisons of anti-sociability….There are sous that are incurable and lost to the rest of society. USE OF SOUND
Harry Partch, American Avant Garde Composer
音樂和音響 (Music and Audio)
The music listened to and enjoyed by myself from early age, atonal 20th and 21st century experimental to Schubert, and Mahler and much more.
1980s: When was 14 years old, a part time announcer on Binghamton’s
WSKG had a 3 or 4 hour program Sunday evenings, based all on experimental contemporary music. This inspired me to investigate music of Cage, Cowell, Nancarrow, Glass, as well as others. About the same time, I was influence by late night Colgate University radio, becoming interested in Bauhaus the UK band, Hardcore, Ralph Records musicians such as The Residence, Snakefinger, and began reading Trouser Press.
High School Media Class :I produced a music review show for the weekly closed circuit TV News Show of Norwich High School, where I introduced viewers (fellow students and teachers) to underground and experimental music. The lingo for the show was “
where music is known as an art form and not a popularity contest. “
Darby Crash of The Germs
I from the earliest have been fond of Big Band Era music. Coleman Hawkins and Bill Doggett were amongst my favored jazz artists in High School years, and I collected much of early Herbie Hancock, as well as Ramsey Lewis.
Experimental Scene Knitting Factory
Later, became a fan of Eric Dolphy, the downtown jazz experimental scene of late 1980s and 90s represented by Elliott Sharp and others.I saw Elliot Sharp a few times on East Houston’s Knitting Factory in early 90s.
Regional folk music from all over encouraged me to find recordings of musicians that were not produced, and living in communities. Bluegrass is itself an interesting story and history. Chinese early music on many levels, Japanese, as well as Ponsori from Korea are among discoveries. Popular music from differing regions are really enjoyable, even from differing eras, and this includes artists sing Old Songs (老歌) from Taiwan and Hong Kong and Shanghai.
For long I have loved Merengue and Mambo (Tito Puente), and later became familiar with Tango from Astor Piazzola, Butchata. From the 30s and 40s, and early blues from Bessie Smith to more recent live music from Hound Dog Taylor.
Classical Music Live in London
In London I went to many symphony performances as well as chamber music, visiting almost weekly one of the many places in London to see such. This included The Barbican, South Bank, Royal Albert Hall. I saw a concert of three musicians, featuring Ravi Shankar’s daughter, Anoushka Shankar, at South Bank in 2002. It was my first concert seeing traditional music of India.
An earlier interest of mine has been audio since I was 14 years old. I first had a Monteverti receiver, in 1980 or so. I purchased much of my first equipment in High School with paper route earnings. Later in the 11th grade I began working at the local radio station WCHN/ WKXZ.
My interests stem from philosophy and religion, often comparative, to sociology, psychoanalysis, anthropology and political and economic histories of the developing world.
I have traveled to 14 countries, spending time in rural areas of Coastal West Africa, visiting less developed areas in Northern Vietnam, and have resided in major cities for extended times, from London to NYC, Taipei, Hong Kong, Canton (Guangzhou). East Europe has been a favored destination both northern and southern.
